Unit Plan
I will be taking over 2 of Mrs. Bailey's tenth grade biology classes and will be doing my unit plan on the cell. My unit plan will go into the cell theory, the evolution of the microscope, the types of cells, the different types of membranes, metabolism, diffusion, different types of transport, the cell cycle, and mitosis/meiosis. I want to incorporate alot of visual as well as hands on activities into my unit plan as a way of keeping the students interested because the cell is one of those topics that staudents can either find really interesting or really boring.I also want to go into diseases that are caused by the malfunction of a cell organelle (rheumatoid arthritis). I think this will help the students gain perspective in terms of just how important the cell is by seeing what can happen when the cell doesn't work properly and the affect it can have on peoples lives. I will be talking with Mrs. Bailey more regarding the resources that I will have available to me, ideas she might have, and also about the things she has done in the past and what has worked for her.
LS1 (9-11) INQ+SAE+FAF -1
Use data and observation to make connections between, to explain, or to justify how specific cell organelles produce/regulate what the cell needs or what a unicellular or multi-cellular organism needs for survival (e.g., protein synthesis, DNA replication, nerve cells).

LS1 (9-11)-1 Students demonstrate understanding of structure and function-survival requirements by

1a explaining the relationships between and amongst the specialized structures of the cell and their functions (e.g. transport of materials, energy transfer, protein building, waste disposal, information feedback, and even movement).

1b explaining that most multicellular organisms have specialized cells to survive, while unicellular organisms perform all survival functions. (e.g. nerve cells communicate with other cells, muscle cells contract, unicellular are not specialized).

LS1 (Ext)-1 Students demonstrate understanding of structure and function-survival requirements by...
1aa describing how the malfunction of cell organelles can lead to disease (e.g. “leaky” lysosomes and rheumatoid arthritis)

1bb identify various specialized cells and common unicellular organisms in
diagrams, photographs and/or microscopic slides
